Twelve nights, five destinations, five fjords, one stave church, zero checked bags. Arctic-first via Lofoten; deep time in the western fjords (Geiranger + Hardanger); out via a Bergen half-day. Designed around Rivka at 19-20 weeks pregnant — quality over quantity, with two hard travel days flagged and paced for.
The one thing to do next
Two days to plan around
EWR overnight → OSL 1h20 connect → 3hr Lofoten drive
SK908 lands 07:35 OSL; DY360 to EVE 08:55. Zero-margin connection — no checked bags is the right call. Arrive Reine ~2pm after 18+ awake hours. Grocery-deliver the rorbu so dinner needs no driving. Nap is fine.
The Great Drive · Geiranger → Hardanger
~10 hrs scenic over Sognefjellet pass (1,434m), early 07:30 start. Stops: Stryn → Loen Skylift (Mt. Hoven cable car) → Lom (1hr lunch at Bakeriet, non-negotiable) → summit photo → Sogndal. Borgund Stave Church traded out to keep arrival before dark. Escape hatch: overnight Sogndal, trim Hardanger to 2 nts.
Things that shape every decision
🤰 Rivka 19-20 weeks pregnant
OB letter required, food rules (no gravlaks, unpasteurized cheese), trekking poles + slow pace on every hike, hospitals memorized per region (see Trip Prep). The single biggest design constraint.
🎒 Carry-on only — entire trip
SAS XXNT66 is 0PC baggage; all domestic flights hand-baggage by default. Three flights have a single gate-check buffer purchased ($30-37 each). No checked bags ever — 1h20 OSL layover demands it.
💳 Card split confirmed
All flights on AMEX Plat 5002 ($2,602). All hotels on CSR Visa 6272 ($3,186). Travel insurance closed — no supplemental needed.

By category (USD)
Norwegian fare bodies didn't include prices in the confirmation emails; ~$200-400 placeholder for those three legs. NOK reference: ~10.5 NOK = $1 USD (approx, not live).
Norway to scale (approx.) with the trip in 10 numbered legs. Solid lines = drives; dashed = flights. Distances and times are road-actual.

Driving in Norway
- Drive on the right. Lights on always (most rentals automatic).
- Speed limits: 50 city / 80 rural / 90-100 motorway. Automatic camera enforcement — fines are heavy.
- BAC limit 0.02% — effectively zero.
- Tunnels (some 8-24 km long) — don't stop, don't change lanes, vents to outside air. Pull off at emergency bay if Rivka feels claustrophobic.
- Tolls auto-billed to the rental — confirm AutoPASS at pickup.
- Fuel: most cars are diesel — verify type at fillup.
- Ferries: Eidsdal-Linge for Eagle Road approach. Download Fjord1 app for schedules.
Food rules (Rivka, 19-20 weeks)
- AVOID: gravlaks, røkt laks (smoked salmon), tartar, unpasteurized farm-shop cheeses (very relevant at Aga cider farms — ask "pasteurisert?")
- AVOID: spekeskinke (cured ham) unless cooked
- FINE: cooked salmon, reindeer (well-done), lamb, king crab (cooked), brown cheese (geitost — pasteurized)
- Tap water safe everywhere — drink it from any tap
- Late dining: Norwegian dinners run 19:00-21:00. Snack stash at 17:00 essential to bridge the gap.

Northern Lights — what to expect
Late August at 68°N (Lofoten): realistic probability 15-25%. Astronomical darkness is only 5-6 hrs/night. Frame as a nice surprise, not a goal. Aurora-app anxiety is a known trip-ruiner — set expectations now.
